Glenglassaugh, 50 Litre Octave Cask Ownership

Ever wanted to own your own cask of whisky?

You can now own your very own cask of Glenglassaugh spirit, for only £500!!!

Your spirit will be filled into a 50 litre cask, known as an Octave, at a strength of 63.5% ABV. These casks have been handcrafted using specially selected staves from larger casks previously used to mature Scotch Whisky.

Your cask will be matured in Number 1 Warehouse at Glenglassaugh Distillery. Glenglassaugh traditional dunnage warehouse dates back to 1875 when the distillery was first founded.

The atmospheric conditions at Glenglassaugh are ideal location for the maturation in that the warehouses are next to the sea. This would impart a superior character and taste to your whisky at the end of the maturation period.

Many malt whiskies in this modern age of economies are transported to the central belt in tankers and are stored in relatively industrial parts of Scotland quite different than the superb location at Glenglassaugh.

Your cask will be selected and filled by hand in their filling store and if you wish, you can visit Glenglassaugh distillery and fill your cask yourself!

To make sure that you know how your spirit is maturing, Glenglassaugh will help you keep a close eye on it by sending you a cask sample once a year. You are also free to visit your cask whenever you want, all you need to do is give them a little advanced warning.

Your choice of inscription will be added to the head of the cask and you will receive a certificate of ownership, bearing a photograph of your cask.

They also have their own bottling facilities where they are currently bottling all of their spirits and whiskies by hand. If you choose to bottle your cask with us, you can even come and do it yourself.

With warehousing of up to 7 years, and a minimum of 3 years included in the price, this is an amazing opportunity to own your own cask of whisky, at an incredibly low price.

A very fine bottling at natural cask-strength from Islay's lost distillery Port Ellen.

Closed 4 years after this malt was made, Port Ellen distillery became widely known after 1836 when owner, John Ramsay, pioneered whisky exports to America, shipping single malt from the quay at Port Ellen.

This years box has been upgraded with a lovely red velvet lining, and with only 5916 bottles released, we dont see it hanging around for long.

Founded by John G. Boker in 1828, Boker’s Bitters gained popularity in New York and around the World as the finest bitters of the Golden Age of mixed drinks. Boker’s Bitters were famously the preferred brand of Professor Jerry Thomas and featured throughout his book, ‘How to Mix Drinks or The Bon Vivant’s Companion’, now recognised as the World’s first bartender’s guide.

Despite being unequalled when used in the refined drinks of the bar, the devastating effect of The Volstead Act, commonly referred to as Prohibition, closed the Boker’s company in the 1920s.

Referencing receipts dating back to 1853, these recreated bitters are compounded using the finest natural herbs and spices and are once again being used globally by bartenders in original libations and classics such as the Japanese Cocktail, Martinez, Manhattan, Crusta and Improved Cocktail.

The botanicals (quassia bark, areca catechu, calamus root substitute, dried orange peel and cardamom) all bring something different to the mix with notes that are herbal, floral, sweet, bitter, spiced, citrus.

Feis Ile 2009

Ardbeg Feis Ile 2009

The Abbey clan have all made it 'back to the mainland' after our amazing week in Islay, and what a week it was!

Islay did us proud! Instead of the incessant rain & gales, we experienced near to tropical weather conditions. Our hosts Ian Brown of the Machrie Hotel http://www.machrie.com/ also did us proud in looking after us with superb food, lots of drink & accommodation. Abbey Whisky looks forward to our next time at the Machrie

One of the best memories that we will take away from our trip from Feis Ile 2009 would be Saturday at the Ardbeg Open Day. We enjoyed all of the open days, but if we had to vote we would be swinging into this direction. The weather helped for sure, but Saturdays open day was perfect in everyway, from 'toss the sheap' (dont ask!), the great tour from Briony, down to the great packed lunchs that they provided for only a fiver. What pushed Ardbeg in front was Michael Heads, Distillery Manager hosting the best managers tasting of the festival...the 'Twisted Tasting'...

Below is just a small peak! at what we enjoyed...

Ardbeg Feis Ile, 2009,Cask 1189 & 1190 - Available from the Abbey Store

Two very special bottles released by Ardbeg for this year’s Feis Ile festival celebrations. Both are 10 year old single casks, taken from two, newly toasted, oak hogshead barrels.

We were lucky enough to taste both of these drams just a few days ago with Michael Heads, Distillery Manager at Ardbeg, and what great whiskies these are.

It’s amazing how they can taste so different from one and other, considering that these both come from the same distillation, matured side by side in the same warehouse, and in similar sourced barrels.

Ardbeg Feis Ile - Single Cask No.1189

Colour:
Toasted Chestnut

Aroma:
A robust and full bodied Ardbeg adding heavily toasted oak spice and nuttiness to the classic style.
With the first sniff, encounter deep roasted espresso coffee and dark chocolate infused with sweet aromatic smoke. Toasted coconut and pralines are enciting and exotic, countered by the rustic oiliness of aged demerara rum, bringing dates, treacle sponge pudding and black olives. Ground nutmeg, tonka bean and Jamaican ginger bring sizzling aromatics from a spice market.
Cedar and menthol cleanse the air before vanilla ice cream is discovered with a sprinkling of salted cashew nuts.
With water, the aroma opens up to reveal roasted walnuts and salty seafood risotto, followed by creamy chocolate fudge. Roasted hazelnuts and chestnuts take centre stage, soaked in treacle toffee and golden syrup.
Marmalade on toast and tangy sherbet limes reveal the Ardbeg citrus fruits baked by the toasted oak cask.

Taste:
Sweet spice dance like fireworks on the tongue in a smokey-sweet explosion. Crushed black pepper, toasted almonds and spiced chestnuts and encountered by a mid palate of chocolate honeycomb, creamy salted fudge and smokey bacon.
Resinous smoke from a dampened fire wafts through a mouthful of cake mix.

Finish:
Long, spicy and resinous, refusing to fade away - leaving smokey sherbet, toasted pralines and lingering dates.

Ardbeg Feis Ile 09 - Single Cask No.1190

Colour:
Golden Brown

Aroma:
A sweet and spiced Ardbeg with elegant aromatic smoke and toasted warmth.
At full strength, the fragrance of honey, lemon and mint humbugs combines with lavender bouquet and sea spray to refresh the senses.
On the second nosing, smokey bacon is discovered, smothered with lashings of maple syrup. Heather honey on toast and cinnamon spiced raisin bread are warming and enticing.
Water releases a rich and flavoursome savoury course of French onion soup and turmeric followed by hickory smokey ham.
A dessert of treacle pudding and thick brandy sauce is served with sticky hot cross buns and glazed oranges. The sweet and savoury foods are permeated by the waxed scent of coal tar soap.

Taste:
Powerfully mouth-coating and chewy, peat smoke makes a dominant entrance bringing a mouthful of smokey charcoal and salty menthol-eucalyptus lozenges. Treacle-toffee apples and cinnamon-spiced pears deliver a scrumptious mid-palate before a mouthful of Viennese coffee rises to an explosive crescendo. Sugar coated pralines and cream then appear with mint and liquorice root.

Finish
Long and bittersweet liquorice and honey, cinnamon and cloves.

This was us leaving the Festival on Sunday taken from the Ferry with the 1030 sunset showing the subtropical look of the Islands of Islay & Jura with the paps showing well.

Glenfiddich - 50 Year Old

This 50 Year Old is one of the most rare and magnificent single malt Scotch whiskies ever bottled.

Bottled in 1991 in a limited edition of just 500 bottles, this whisky came from a batch of nine casks laid down in the 1930s (one cask was laid down for each of William Grant's nine children).

One of the bottles set a record in the 1990s when it fetched 99,999,999 lira (about £35,000) at a charity auction in Italy in the 1990s.

Only 500 bottles have been produced, each signed by Alexander Grant Gordon, former Chairman, and great-grandson of the company's founder.

Packaged in a hand-made oak box with brass plaque; both the label and tasting notes personalised with the bottle number and bottling date and the owner of this great bottling is issued with a Certificate and appointed a Freeman of the Glenfiddich Distillery.

From the limited stock of Glenfiddich Reserve, this unique single malt Sctoch Whisky was hand bottled at the Glenfiddich Distillery, on 27th May 2005 and bottled from cask no.16032 which had laid undisturbed since 1972.

This bottle No.15 is one of a Limited Edition of 216 bottles.

Each cask of Glenfiddich Vintage Reserves has its own uniqe quality and experiences from the wood it has matured in to the time it has spent in our Glendiddich warehouse.

"A Very Unusual Experience"

Of all Islay's whiskies it is Ardbeg which stands alone as the Peatiest, yet the most delicate and complex.

However, back in the far off days of 1980, an experiment took place when small batches of unpeated and lightly peated malt were produced. Limited quantities of a very special whisky, christened Kildalton.

By removing the peat, the fruity flavours of the purifier on the still are brought to the fore along with the waxinessof the wooden washbacks and more of the grainy flavours of the barley itself.
